Fantasy Women's 124 Pound Tournament

In keeping with the spirit of our men’s fantasy tournaments, The Don would like to take a look at the women’s divisions as well.  Bellator beat me to the punch and ran an actual 115 pound women’s tournament which was highly competitive and provided more than its share of drama and controversy with Zoila "Warrior Princess” Frausto emerging as the champion.  Frausto took a controversial decision over Jessica Aguilar in the semi-finals then upset heavily favored and undefeated Megumi Fujii to win the title.  If there would be another 115 pound women’s tourney, The Don would have Megumi Fujii as the winner.

Strikeforce is also a bit ahead of me with the women’s tournaments as well.  The San Jose based organization recently ran it’s own four-woman one night tournament in the 135 pound weight class with Miesha "Takedown” Tate coming out on top and earning a title shot against newly crowned champion Marloes Coenen.  Coenen recently defeated reigning champion Sarah Kaufman to earn the title.  Coenen and Tate would likely be my finalists in a potential tournament but you will have to wait until Coenen and Tate square off you get my prediction on that outstanding fight.

Also, the current situation in the women’s 145 pound weight class is pretty simple.  Cristiane "Cyborg” Santos is the Strikeforce champion and there are no true contenders for her belt at the moment so the winner of that tournament would be a foregone conclusion.

That would be the rationale behind doing just one women’s tournament at the current time but as exciting new challengers emerge multiple women’s fantasy tournaments will be on the horizon.

The seedings and match-ups are below with the seedings coming from the November edition of the Unified Women’s MMA rankings.  As with the men’s tournaments it’s an eight fighter field in bracket fashion.

So let’s quit building it up and look at the tournament predictions:

QUARTER-FINAL ROUND (seed is in parenthesis):

1-Tara LaRosa (18-2) vs. 8- Jessica "Evil” Eye (2-0)

4- Aisling "Ais the Bash” Daly (9-1-0) vs. 5- "Slick” Sally Krumdiack (8-3-0)

3- Rosi "The Surgeon” Sexton (10-2-0) vs. 6- Cat "Alpha” Albert (4-0-0)

2- Carina "Beauty but the Beast” Damm (15-4-0) vs. 7- Monica Lovato (5-2-0)

LaRosa vs. Eye—LaRosa will have the decided advantage in skills and experience but Eye will not be a pushover. Eye has picked up two wins since her debut in June and will come to scrap but will not be able to overcome the experience of LaRosa who had won 15 straight prior to her recent loss to Roxanne Modafferi in a thrilling bout in May.  Eye gets through the first round before falling prey to a rear naked choke from LaRosa

LaRosa over Eye by rear naked choke submission in round two.

Daly vs. Krumdiack—Irish based Daly has finished eight of her nine victories before the final bell with five coming by TKO. Krumdiack has won three of her last four and has faced some of the top competition in her division.  Daly looks to have the size and power advantage that would help her earn a hard fought unanimous decision over Krumdiack.

Daly over Krumdiack by unanimous decision.

Sexton vs. Albert--  My favorite match-up of the opening round as the English submission machine Sexton squares off with Colorado based powerhouse Cat Albert. Sexton will have the experience advantage and likely an edge in grappling but Albert has a tough ground game and will have the strength advantage.  In a tough choice we will go with the experience of Sexton to get her a razor thin split decision over the game Albert.

Sexton over Albert by split decision.

Damm vs. Lovato --  Damm brings her well-rounded experience in against Lovato who has finished all of her victories prior to the final bell.  Damm would have a decided size and experience advantage that Lovato would not be able to overcome as Damm earns a rear naked choke submission late in round one.

Damm over Lovato by rear naked choke submission in round one.

SEMI-FINAL MATCH-UPS:

LaRosa vs. Daly – Daly would have the proverbial punchers chance in this bout but I would look for LaRosa to use her experience and well rounded skills to weather the early attack.  After the early onslaught from Daly the bout will belong to LaRosa who will pick her shots and then get the fight to the ground where she will earn another RNC victory on her way to the finals.

LaRosa over Daly by rear naked choke in round one.

Sexton vs. Damm – Wow, what a semi-final battle this would be! These women met in December of 2006 with Sexton victorious by first round armbar.  Since then though, Damm has been the far more active fighter chalking up 11 fights since their last meeting while Sexton has had just five bouts over the past four years. Damm has improved her skills during that time and we will look for her to even the score with Sexton by out-working her on the feet and in the grappling areas.  Look for a hard fought unanimous decision for Damm.

Damm over Sexton by unanimous decision.

THE DON’S FANTASY WOMEN’S 125 POUND CHAMPIONSHIP:

Tara LaRosa vs. Carina Damm – Another fantastic match-up in the women’s division as two well-rounded and experienced fighters square off for the title.  LaRosa brings a more cerebral and technical game while Damm is the more powerful and explosive fighter.  In a bout that would be sure to provide multiple scrambles, transitions and exchanges, it’s the size and strength advantage of Damm that would be the difference between two fighters so evenly matched in other areas.  With the championship bout scheduled for five rounds we would get into the championship rounds before this fight is decided by the ground and pound action from Damm as she earns the victory in the fourth round to capture the fantasy title.

Damm over LaRosa by ground and pound TKO in round four to win The Don’s Fantasy Women’s 125 pound Championship.
