The State of Women’s MMA

Rousey a former U.S. Olympian has officially joined Dana White's MMA organization … and automatically becomes the 135 lb women's champion.

We're told 25-year-old Ronda will defend her title in 2013 possible opponents include Sara McMann, Cris Cyborg and rival Miesha Tate.

In a brief interview, Dana White once said that women's MMA would never be in the UFC. Well, never say never even though you just said it twice. Even Dana White has since changed his mind and done a one hundred and eighty degree change of perspective on the subject. Things have changed in women's MMA and the perspective that Dana White had on women's MMA in general. One of the reasons being that women's MMA at that time wasn't seen as a viable business or as having an established following. Now, women's MMA is in the spotlight because of the emergence of Invicta Fc and Strike force women's division.

Since the August 15, 2009 fight between Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg, it has been shown that women's MMA has an audience and the marketability of female's in a predominately male sport. Furthermore, "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey has changed Dana White's mind due to two major things taking place in the past two years. First, Zuffa purchasing Strike force on March 12, 2011 and second, you can now put Ronda Rousey on a fight card with pay per view as there is a following in the sport and a fan base." Rowdy" Ronda Rousey showed she is in women's MMA to stay since she has won all 3 amateur fights and 6 pro fights. She has defeated her opponents by arm bar in the first minute of the fights except for one which still ended in the first round. Dana White was talking about doing a fight between Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg. However, Cris Cyborg tested positive for anabolic steroids and was stripped of her title. Sarah Mcmann was a silver medalist in the Olympics in wrestling. She just left Invicta fc for Strike force and could be a possible contender for Ronda Roussey if the Cyborg bout doesn't take place.

Women's MMA has also grown both in division and leagues. Once Cris Cyborg, Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate were they only names we really knew but now you have the Jessica Penn, an atomweight fighter, who is the first ever Invicta Fc world champion. Taking place shortly is an Invicta FC Straw weight Championship bout between Carla "Cookie Monster” Esparza and undefeated Jewels champion, Ayaka Hamasaki. The Invicta Fc Top flyweights contenders are Sheila the German Tank Gaff and Rosi "The Surgeon" Sexton and the bantamweights top contender is Sarah Kaufman.

Some think that setting up a prime time women's MMA fight between Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg could negatively impact the sport. Being that you wouldn't normally put two top contenders against each other in the first female MMA fight that would be seen by the masses. Obviously, it could go either way being that it could propel women's MMA to its highest level or it could slow the overall momentum of the sport. That has yet to be seen but being that is a current topic of discussion now shows how far women's MMA has grown and will continue to grow in the future.
